PARENT COACHING FOR INDIVIDUALS, COUPLES AND GROUPS
Parent Coaching FAQ
Parent coaching focuses on practical strategies and support tailored to parenting challenges, while therapy addresses mental health concerns or emotional healing.
Therapy vs. Coaching: Key Differences
Therapy
• Focuses on mental health treatment and emotional healing.
• Addresses clinical issues such as anxiety, depression, trauma, or other diagnoses.
• Guided by a licensed professional under ethical and legal standards (HIPAA, state regulations).
• Goal: Help clients process past experiences, manage symptoms, and improve psychological well-being.
Coaching
• Focuses on personal growth, skills, and future goals.
• Works on areas like parenting strategies, communication, leadership, or life transitions.
• Non-clinical, forward-looking, and does not diagnose or treat mental health conditions.
• Goal: Empower clients to take action, build confidence, and achieve specific objectives.
• Is not a covered service by insurance.
Why You Would Not Do Both With the Same Person
• Ethical Boundaries: Combining therapy and coaching creates dual relationships, which can blur roles and compromise objectivity.
• Different Agreements & Standards: Therapy is regulated and confidential under mental health laws; coaching operates under different frameworks.
• Client Clarity: Mixing roles can confuse the client about whether the focus is on healing or goal-setting, leading to unmet expectations.
• Risk Management: If coaching uncovers mental health concerns, you need the ability to refer out rather than switch roles.
Sessions are primarily online for flexibility and convenience. In-person options may be available upon request depending on location.
Most sessions are 60 minutes, giving us time to explore challenges and create actionable steps.
It depends on your goals and needs. Some parents find clarity in a few sessions, while others prefer ongoing support. I have found that the 12 week program provides a strong foundation of information and motivation, and parents often see improvements in their relationships with themselves, their children and others during this time. Some parents may decide to continue after 12 sessions to focus on more specific topics and needs. Some parents may benefit from monthly follow ups to support continued integration.
Parent coaching is focused on the parent(s)/caregiver(s) of children and while interacting with your child may occur inadvertently during a session (they may be home, curious about our video session, for example), empowering parents is the focus.
Yes! Grandparents, foster parents, teachers, daycare providers and other caregivers are welcome. Anyone in a caregiving role can benefit from coaching.
I bring over a decade of experience working with children (ages 3+), pre-teens, teens, adults, and families as a licensed mental health professional and Registered Play Therapist. In managed care and outpatient settings, I’ve seen time and again how parents struggle to balance connection, boundaries, and emotional regulation.
This experience gives me a deep understanding of child development, family dynamics, and the challenges parents face every day. As a coach, I use this knowledge to help you build practical strategies for communication, limit-setting, and fostering resilience—without crossing into therapy. My approach is collaborative, strengths-based, and focused on helping you feel confident and supported as you guide your child’s growth.
